Like most people, I used to see myself as a good person. If you knew me then, you might have seen me that way. Yet, how I outwardly appeared to others wasn’t who I was on the inside. The dictionary defines “good” as “moral excellence.” I considered myself a moral person, but that was just how I judged myself. I didn’t judge myself based on a standard that applied to everyone, everywhere. That standard is God’s standard, His Law—a standard summarized in the Ten Commandments. When I looked at myself in the mirror of God’s Law, I discovered what had always been true. I was not a good person. I have lied, stolen, coveted, hated others, and used God’s name in vain. Of course I was guilty of many other sins. God’s Law is the standard by which every person will be judged. If you were to honestly examine yourself as I did, you, too, would find yourself guilty of before God of breaking His Law and deserving of Hell. So, how did Jesus change my life? God sent Jesus to pay the penalty for my sins by suffering and dying on the cross. He then rose from the grave, defeating sin and death so I could go free. You can be set free, too!
