How many social networking friends do you have? 500? 1,363? 2? What was the nicest thing anyone ever did for you? It might have been a gift or some special honor. Has anyone ever died for you? Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends" (Jn. 15:13). But Jesus did not lay His life down for His friends; He laid it down for His enemies! We all need to be reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:18-19). We are at war with God and He has declared war on us. Why? Because we have sinned. We have broken God's moral Law. We've lied, stolen, been greedy, and have disobeyed our parents. We are all guilty as charged. The Christian message is that Jesus, God in the flesh (Jn. 1:1), came to this earth and was tempted as we are but never sinned. As He hung on the cross He offered Himself as a sacrifice, and like a scapegoat, the sins of many were laid on Him. If we will repent (turn from all known sin) and believe (abandon ourselves in trust to what Christ did on the cross alone) we can be declared righteous (not guilty) before God (2 Cor. 5:21).
