The world teaches you to follow your heart. The Bible warns: don’t. Most don’t understand “sin.” They incorrectly think only of lists of “Dos and Don’ts.” Yet, Jesus was hardest on religious people! Why? They were hypocrites. They honored God outwardly but their hearts were far from Him (Mark 7:6). Do you know the greatest sin? Most people don’t. The greatest sin is violating the greatest commandment. Jesus taught, “‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ This is the great and foremost commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38). The Bible is direct: “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3). Instead of loving God, “all of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6). Apart from Christ, we live our entire lives – every moment – in violation of the greatest command of the living God. This seems right to us but in the end it leads to death (Proverbs 21:2). Even “religious” and “moral” activities can be sin if done with an impure heart (1 Samuel 15:22). Jesus said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. These are the things which defile the man” (Matthew 15:19-20). We need a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26-27). Turn away from following your heart. Instead, purify your heart and follow the Lord (James 4:8). “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).
